Sophist Solutions releases Led 2.1

High performance text engine available

Sudbury, Mass. (December 13, 1996) -- Sophist Solutions has shipped Led 2.1, an update to their critically acclaimed class library. Led 2.1 is a C++-based class library designed to support the construction of text editors, word processors, HTML editors, and other text intensive applications. The Led text engine is lightning fast, even when working with very large files. It supports style runs, tabs, word wrapping, object embedding (including OLE(tm), Pictures, URLs), and much more. Led is specially designed to take full advantage of the new UI features of Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, and Apple Macintosh System 7.5, including drag and drop, OLE embedding, and the Internet.

This new Led release contains several new features. Led 2.1 now supports Microsoft's Rich Text Format (RTF), a standard file format for word processing on PCs. And Led 2.1 now has rudimentary support for reading and writing HTML files (widely used on the Internet/Web). This can allow you to easily read, or create HTML, or form the basis for some more advanced HTML web application.

Led 2.1 also adds support for Microsoft Internet Explorer's ActiveX URL embedding. So you can easily use Led - for example - as a bookmarking utility for URLs (created by either Netscape Navigator, or Microsoft's Internet Explorer).

Application developers will find it extremely easy to use Led. It has a robust, advanced object design. Led's abstract-class/mixin design scales from simple applications to complex applications without requiring the developer to use more features than are needed. Additionally, Led is provided with easy-to-use wrappers for the most popular Windows (MFC) and Macintosh (PowerPlant, Think Class Library) application frameworks.

Sophist Solutions has also released an update their suite of shareware applications and components. The LedIt! shareware applications and components demonstrate the power and flexibility of the Led library. This shareware suite - called LedIt! - is provided in source code form along with the Led class library.

Pricing and availability

For commercial developers, a royalty-free license to use Led costs US$1000 per seat. This entitles the developer to source code for all supported Led platforms. Non-commercial developers (those developing shareware, freeware, and all students) can obtain a totally free license to use Led. Such free licenses will not include support. Non-commercial developers may still purchase support contracts.

In both cases, the Led class library comes with full source code for the Led class library, and for the shareware applications above.
